A colt by Darley America's Nyquist bred on the cross over Bernardini that has realized much success on the racetrack and in the sales ring fetched $2.25 million from owner Alex Lieblong to take over at the top of the table on day three of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Lexington Wednesday afternoon. The colt was consigned by Taylor Made as agent.Bred by the team of Fred Hertrich III and John D. Fielding, the Feb. 25 foal (hip 642) is a son of the unraced Hot Cha, a half-sister to six winners, including two-time Grade III scorer Scalding (Nyquist) and GSW Hot and Sultry (Speightster). The same cross was responsible for hip 415, that sold early in the session for $1.75 million.Said the new owner: “He looked gorgeous. He checked every box I ever saw. He was in a different class. Obviously, the price showed that and someone else thought that. Now if we just get the check to clear, we'll be in good shape. I think it's the highest ever paid for a horse. At 75, you don't hesitate as much as you used to.”Now 14 years of age, 2014 GI Kentucky Derby hero Nyquist has been getting it done at the races this season, with a dozen stakes winners to his credit including the 'TDN Rising Stars' presented by Hagyard Nysos, winner of the GI Met Mile after finishing a cracking runner-up in the G1 Saudi Cup; and Knightsbridge, romping winner of the GI Pacific Classic in his first try at 10 furlongs last month.
