Stromboli's two main crater areas in mid September 2026 (image: INGV webcam)Ordinary Strombolian activity continued at both crater areas during 7–13 September 2026, according to the latest weekly bulletin from the volcano observatory in Catania (INGV Osservatorio Etneo).The overall explosion frequency was medium-low, while the intensity of individual explosions was generally low. A more energetic explosion at about 20:50 UTC on 11 September produced a satellite-detected thermal anomaly of approximately 158 MW. Other thermal activity was generally low, with isolated medium and high anomalies.Volcanic tremor remained at a medium level. Very-long-period seismic events occurred at rates of 9–14 per hour and generally had low amplitudes. No local earthquake with a magnitude of ML 1.0 or greater was located.Sulfur dioxide emissions were at medium levels and showed a moderate increase. Helium isotope values rose into the very-high range, while soil carbon dioxide concentrations at San Bartolo remained high.Strain, GNSS and tilt measurements showed no significant changes. INGV noted gaps in several geochemical datasets and cautioned that poor visibility may have affected some satellite observations.
