Liverpool defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe will now be eligible to play for the Reds, having gone out on loan in order to obtain a UK work permit.The 18-year-old was a revelation in pre-season as he seized the opportunity handed to him by Andoni Iraola, who was severely short on senior centre-backs due to injury and, in Virgil van Dijk’s case, a belated return from his post-World Cup break.However, the Austrian didn’t meet the criteria for a UK work permit as he hadn’t yet accrued the requisite game-time in competitive fixtures, and he was subsequently loaned out to Levante for the 2026/27 campaign.Ndukwe now eligible for UK work permitNdukwe came off the bench to make his debut for Los Azulgranas in their 4-2 defeat to Barcelona in LaLiga over the weekend, and as Ian Doyle explained for the Liverpool Echo, that 19-minute appearance was significant.By coming on in that fixture, the teenager has now reached the requisite threshold to secure a UK work permit, and Liverpool have the option to recall him from his loan in January if they wish to do so.The Reds will also have an exemption spot available from February onwards which’d enable the Austrian to play for Iraola’s side at that point.(Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)Want more Empire of the Kop coverage?
