Australia’s Maltese community continues to leave its mark, with one suburb standing out above all the rest.New figures shared by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveal that Llandilo, New South Wales, has the highest percentage of residents with Maltese ancestry in Australia, with an impressive 27.9% of its population identifying as having Maltese roots.The data, based on the 2021 Census of Population and Housing and released ahead of the 2026 Australian Census on 11th August, also highlights the suburbs with the largest Maltese communities across every Australian state and territory.Victoria comes in second, with Hillside recording 11.1% of residents claiming Maltese ancestry, while Habana, Queensland, follows closely behind at 11.5%.The remaining top suburbs are:Woodville Park, South Australia – 1.5%Macarthur, Australian Capital Territory – 1.1%Virginia, Northern Territory – 0.7%Beverley, Western Australia – 0.7%Westbury, Tasmania – 0.7%The figures only include suburbs and localities with more than 1,000 residents and exclude overseas visitors.While New South Wales boasts Australia’s most Maltese suburb by a significant margin, the data is another reminder of the enduring legacy of Maltese migration, with communities spread right across the country.With Australia’s next census taking place on 11th August, it’ll be interesting to see whether Llandilo keeps its crown as the nation’s most Maltese suburb.What do you make of these stastistics?•
