While Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) proved to be another enormous commercial success, grossing $869.1 million worldwide, its reception suggests the long-running dinosaur series could now be headed for another extended hiatus.Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, Rebirth introduced a brand-new cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. But despite its strong box office performance, the sequel received largely negative reviews from many longtime fans and critics, with its controversial story decisions proving particularly divisive. Now, the future of the series remains uncertain. In fact, we may not see another film for years.Credit: Universal PicturesRelated: ‘Jurassic Park’ Launches Brand-New Continuity After ‘Rebirth’ Ruins Film SeriesJurassic Park History May Be Repeating ItselfThe situation bears similarities to Jurassic Park III (2001), which arrived after behind-the-scenes production problems and an underdeveloped screenplay. Following its 2001 release, the franchise disappeared from theaters for 14 years, eventually returning as Jurassic World (2015).Now, history could be repeating itself.Speaking to Screen Rant about the future of the franchise, Koepp admitted there is currently no obvious path forward for the series in “a logically and in a scientifically believable way,” saying:“You can’t say trilogy. You got to make one good movie. So now what about another good movie? How would we do that? I think that the challenge of Rebirth was the franchises have become very big, very spread out. Let’s make the dinosaurs special again by restricting them. So we restricted them to this thing, and then the challenge becomes, okay, now how do we logically and in a scientifically believable way expand? That would be the question. If somebody can answer that, I think you’ll have a next movie.”Those comments suggest that, despite reports of another Jurassic sequel being in early development, Universal and its creative team have yet to settle on a convincing direction for the series.Credit: Universal PicturesRelated: ‘Jurassic Park’ Officially Hitting Reset After ‘Rebirth’ Ruins Film SeriesIf that remains the case, the Jurassic Park franchise could once again spend years away from the big screen before eventually returning with another creative reset—just as it did in 2001, before being revived (and rebranded) in 2015 with the hugely successful Jurassic World. That film, directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, became a global box office phenomenon, earning over $1.67 billion. It also got two direct sequels with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).While Rebirth was also released under the World banner, it’s a standalone film that does not seemingly set up any sequels, which is hardly surprising given that the film itself was running on fumes. What are your thoughts on Jurassic World Rebirth?
