A TikTok story about a family conflict has racked up an impressive 3.5 million views. A TikToker known as Reddit Sahj, who narrates Reddit stories, shared a post from a man who found himself at the center of a tense confrontation after his sister announced she was pregnant. Unfortunately, he hasn’t credited the original post, so we only have his narrative to go on. Sahj narrated the man’s perspective, stating, “My sister just announced to the whole family that she’s pregnant and everybody celebrated her except for me. And I’ve realised I don’t want my sister to be happy.” His frustration stems from the fact that he currently has custody of his sister’s 11-year-old son, a child she lost custody of when he was just 6 years old. According to the narrator, the sister was an alcoholic who would frequently forget to feed her own child. Sahj noted that the man had been the primary caregiver for his nephew for five years, and had described the reality of raising a child who had experienced severe neglect, noting, “I had to watch that kid hide under a bed with crackers because he was scared that somebody would take him. I had to watch that kid hide food in his pillow because he felt like he might not have anything to eat tomorrow.”  Even loved and flourishing, the child had struggles, and would have to see his mother choose someone else The behavioural patterns observed by the redditor align with research from Harvard Medical School. They noted that early adverse experiences like abandonment, extreme deprivation and toxic stress can significantly hamper a young person’s development, behavior, and mental health.  The researcher noted that without early intervention, “They don’t know how to have relationships with anybody.” Kinship Carers UK also noted that children struggling with the loss of a parent often feel that they are the ones at fault, which can lead to a significant drop in self-esteem.  @storieswithsahj This may make me a bad person ♬ original sound – Reddit Sahj During the video call where she made her announcement and expressed her excitement to be a mother, Sahj noted that her brother couldn’t hold back. “Having this kid won’t erase the kid that’s in the next room to me while we’re on Facetime. Having this kid won’t replace the relationship that you have with your current kid.” This comment immediately changed the atmosphere, causing family members to end the call. Per Sahj, the redditor acknowledged that his mother thought the sister deserved a second chance, but he remains firm. “I’m proud that she was able to kick [the alcohol]. However, she haven’t tried to fix the relationship with her son.” He explained that his nephew views his mother more like an uninvolved aunt than a parent.  When the sister eventually spoke to the redditor, she claimed she had tried to reach out and suggested he should have pushed his nephew to talk to her more. Her boyfriend even yelled at the writer, labeling him unsupportive. Despite the pressure, the narrator stands by his choice to prioritize the well-being of the boy. He concluded his story by saying, “I’m not happy for you. I don’t want you to be happy. Because the person I love the most, your son that’s in that room, my son that I adopted, your. The one that came out of you. I couldn’t love the boy more if he came out of me some magical way.” The TikTok community was completely on the Redditor’s side. User MrsDunny512 commented, “I have an 11 year old son that is my sister’s child.” Is all you needed to say. You’re a good man.  Another user, FathersonhausofGucci, chimed in by saying, “Oh h-ll no, we are ALL ON YOUR SIDE.” Others, like Da Real GHOST, emphasized the importance of holding people accountable, noting, “Not everything is forgivable, that’s not immaturity that’s clarity, I’m proud of you for staying true to yourself.” While parents abandoning their children is shocking and sadly, a repeating occurence in the world out there, the authenticity of the story above can’t be proven since the TikToker narration doesn’t even link the original Reddit post. But whether the above incident is true or not, unfortunately, way too many similar and even worse examples exist. At the extreme end of neglect and abandonment, the children in question have seen tragic ends. Recently, a Georgia man was sentenced to multiple life terms for mistreating his children – a truth that came out after his teen son set the house on fire. After his sentencing, the prosecutors noted that the children flourished away from their parents but had severe developmental delays. For Joycelynn Ann Dylewski, aid came too late, leaving her to die with rotten teeth and a severe lice infestation. Same as in the previous situation, the parents have been separated from the surviving children.
