A man in Osceola County, Michigan, reportedly stopped to help a stranded motorist, only to learn the next day that the man he had helped was allegedly a bank robber, according to a TikTok video shared by user Al (@ilovemylabrador). The video, which was captioned “i cannot make this up,” shows the man, presumably Al’s father, recounting the story to his daughter, who filmed him off-screen. According to Al, the events took place the day after he gave the man a ride. The man who was allegedly given the ride has been identified as Colin Ian Schingle, who has since been charged in connection with an attempted robbery, according to Up North Live. The dad says his daughter told him to pick up the hitchhiker “That’s him. No wonder he said it’s just been one of them days. His van broke down in the church parking lot where he stopped to change his clothes after robbing Lake Oxyhola State Bank,” he said, referring to what appears to be the Lake Osceola State Bank. According to the dad’s account in the video, his daughter had told him about the hitchhiker. “My daughter was coming back from Cadillac, and she said there’s a guy hitchhiking down 20 Mile, and nobody has stopped to pick him up. So I went,” he explained. Accepting a ride from a stranger can carry serious risks, as seen in the case of a hitchhiker held captive for seven years. @ilovemylabrador i cannot make this up ♬ Saxophones getting louder – Slowed – AntonioVivald The dad said he then pulled up and offered the man a ride. “I gave that guy a ride yesterday. Yeah, he came walking up and I’m like, ‘You need a ride somewhere, brother?’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, thank you so much,'” he recounted in the video. He added that he asked the man if he was hurt, and said the man had him drive to a house nearby. The dad appeared calm about the situation. “He didn’t shoot me or kill me or anything, but I got to call the state police now,” he said in the video. The video also shows the dad later contacting authorities. Sitting at a desk, he explained his role, saying, “I don’t know that this says is helpful or has any relevance to you at all, but the gentleman that, uh, robbed the bank in Tustin on the 23rd, I guess it was, or at least that’s when you executed your, uh, your, your actions against him. I picked him up.” According to Up North Live, Schingle has been charged with attempted bank robbery in connection with an attempted robbery at the Lake Osceola State Bank in Tustin. Prosecutors also filed a fourth-offense habitual offender notice against him. Per the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, as cited by Up North Live, deputies responded at around 10:08 a.m. after receiving a report of an armed robbery at the bank. Rides linked to bank robberies have made headlines before, including a first date that turned into a heist. Investigators established a perimeter, gathered surveillance video, and used a K-9 named Tam to track the suspect before determining he had left the area in a vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. After the sheriff’s office released photos of a person and vehicle of interest, Meceola Central Dispatch reportedly received a tip identifying a potential suspect and providing an address. Deputies later said they located Schingle near the residence and took him into custody on an outstanding out-of-county warrant. He is said to be lodged in the Osceola County Jail. The dad’s account drew a large reaction online. The video had been viewed over 657,000 times. One viewer wrote, “now that is some dad lore,” while another said, “i’m genuinely crying this is so funny for some reason. he’s so calm about this.” Other viewers related to the story and the dad’s robe. “My dad has that exact same robe, it’s probably 20 years old lol,” one comment read. Another viewer wrote, “As the daughter of a dad with a pure heart, I get it girl. Hang in there.”
