Paul Merson has reacted to Tottenham Hotspur shattering their transfer record twice this week to rebuild their midfield ahead of Roberto De Zerbi’s first full season in charge.Spurs fans were over the moon on Tuesday when the Lilywhites broke their transfer record to land Mateus Fernandes, in a deal worth £85m from West Ham.What followed the next day was even more stunning as Tottenham agreed a deal worth £100m to poach Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, who finished five spots above them in the Premier League last season. The Lilywhites have sent out a message to the rest of the division that they mean business, and one former Arsenal man is very impressed with what they have done this summer.Photo by Michael Driver/MI News/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesPaul Merson claims Sandro Tonali is exactly who Tottenham neededMerson confessed that the Italy internaitonal has been one of his favourite players to watch in the Premier League over the last few years. He opined that the midfield department has been Spurs’ biggest weakness over the last two years, and praised Roberto De Zerbi for sorting out that problem.Reacting to the 26-year-old’s move to Tottenham, Merson told Sky Sports: “Tonali is a very good signing. He is one of my favourite players in the Premier League. He is a proper, proper midfielder. Whenever I’ve watched Tottenham, I always think they are a bit overrun in midfield. They do not ever dominate games.“They’ve got good centre halves and forwards when they are all fit, but they never dominate the midfield and the manager [Roberto De Zerbi] has come in and highlighted that and he has brought in two very good midfield players.”Merson says Aston Villa could regret not relegating SpursThe 58-year-old expects Tottenham to be a force in the Premier League season and feels that their 2-1 win at Villa Park back in May could turn out to be a sliding doors moment. He suggested that Unai Emery’s men had the chance to send the Lilywhites to the Championship and may now rue not fielding their strongest side.Merson continued about Spurs: “I expect them to have a good season next year and I wonder if that Aston Villa performance against Tottenham at the end of last season will come back and bite them when they got well beaten and could have probably relegated them – that could come back to bite them when we are looking at fourth or fifth in the league next year for Champions League positions. But he [De Zerbi] has bought very well at the moment.”READ MORE: Cristian Romero injury update as Tottenham plot big-money sale after World CupThe post Paul Merson reacts to Tottenham Hotspur signing one of his ‘favourite players’ appeared first on Spurs Web.
