Kollam to strengthen waste processing facilities - The HinduPublished - July 04, 2026 07:19 pm IST - KOLLAMExtensive plans to upgrade Kollam district’s waste management infrastructure was outlined by Labour MInister Bindhu Krishna at at high-level meeting convened at the District Collectorate on Saturday to discuss permanent solutions for the district’s various issues including waste management.The government will completely eliminate all conditions that allow drug trafficking to thrive, Ms. Bindu said..During the meeting, the Minister directed authorities to take immediate steps to clear the overgrown plots near Vaddy beach. Highlighting the need for a permanent solution to the waste disposal issues in the region, she ordered the urgent cleaning of four acres of land acquired from Harrison Malayalam Plantation, one acre belonging to the Kerala Water Authority, and the Port Authority’s land at Kodimaram Junction.Speaking at the meeting, the District Collector informed that a joint inspection will be conducted by the Corporation, Excise, Police, Port, and Water Authority departments, after which the cleanup drive would be executed with the cooperation of the Suchitwa Mission and the Corporation.The Minister also outlined extensive plans to upgrade the district’s waste management infrastructure, stating that more systems will be implemented for organic waste collection. This includes making the existing Thumboormuzhi units more functional and expanding biogas plants.A special meeting will be convened soon to accelerate the construction of the compressed biogas plant being set up by BPCL at Kureepuzha, alongside efforts to speed up the completion of the ongoing Sewage Treatment Plant. Furthermore, the waste collection drive led by the Haritha Karma Sena within the corporation limits will be expanded, and they will be provided with vehicles and necessary equipment.Several other key waste management projects are also on the anvil for the district. The Minister confirmed that the setting up of Material Collection Facilities (MCFs) at Mulamkadakam and Kilikollur is currently under consideration.To prevent the illegal dumping of waste in public spaces, extensive CCTV camera surveillance networks will be installed. Additionally, the construction of the sanitary pad disposal plant at Tangasseri and a regional processing plant at Piravanthur will be fast-tracked. The meeting was attended by Mayor A.K. Hafeez, ADM S.
