While we’ve seen isekai manga series involving animals or transformations into one, such as So I’m a Spider, So What, the tone can sometimes be more dramatic or serious. We don’t see as many that take the Handyman Saitou in Another Worldapproach, where the looks at daily life are prioritized. Or where we see someone completely unequipped for fantasy life there. The A Cat is a Cat in Any Life isekai manga is a perfect comedic, lighthearted, slice of life series completely prioritizing and focusing on cats being introduced to a fantasy world. Square Enix’s two-in-one omnibus release feels like a perfect way to commemorate and honor such a sweet series. Editor’s Note: There will be no spoilers for the A Cat is a Cat in Any Life isekai manga series below. Truck-kun strikes again. The victim? An adorable munchkin cat struck down in her prime. God took pity on her, however, and reincarnated her in a world where no car would ever threaten her life again. So, she’s now in a fantasy city and, not long after arriving, meets a young woman descended from a hero who’s just been assigned the task of defeating the Demon King. She’s not interested in that, but is smitten by the fluffy beast. She captures the cat in a bag and brings it home to live with her and her mother. However, after finding out the cat prefers to be outside, she then decides to actually accept the mission and become a hero so she can spend more time with the creature. Image via Square Enix Every chapter does advance a general storyline eventually! More importantly, the A Cat is a Cat in Any Life manga shows how the heroine, Demon King, and Knight Captain’s lives are all affected by each cat from our world that found themselves swept away on an isekai adventure after experiencing unfortunate ends. Every experience features a character learning some sort of fact about feline natures as a result of direct interactions with them. Each chapter closes out with a “lesson” learned that shows that even in another world, a cat or a person who loves them will behave the same. In the case of the heroine, her encounters with the original cat show how fickle, willful, and independent cats can be. We see her companion bring her dead mice, birds, and slime after she was knocked out on a mission and is recovering! She spends the 200 gold stipend from the king to get outfitted with equipment on fish after realizing the cat loves them. When she finally decides to head out on her quest, all because the cat loved the outdoors, the cat then decides it prefers indoor life in the house with her mother. The situations with the Demon King and Knight Captain offer opportunities to see different, equally valuable, sides of cat ownership and life. In the case of the villain, three Russian Blue kittens reincarnated near his base. However, they showed up too young to care or fend for themselves. Which means we see him use all his minions and forces to figure out how to raise them and keep them alive due to being so smitten. The Captain of the Knights found herself a Scottish Fold, and he’s basically the only one she can be herself with. Fortunately, he’s good natured and more than happy to be indoors with her, letting her cry happy or frustrated tears into his soft tummy. Truly, it’s such a fun, lighthearted, touching, lovely omnibus. Now, aside from the A Cat is a Cat in Any Life being a frankly adorable isekai manga, the effort Square Enix put into the release is fantastic. There’s a cover with folds that mimic a book jacket and include additional comments from mangaka Ema Tohyama. There’s color to the pages, which is especially delightful for the cute cat illustrations. There are also book edge decorations of pink cat silhouettes with paws. It makes the book feel more lavish. The A Cat is a Cat in Any Life isekai manga captures all of the good, annoying, and perplexing cat behaviors and shows how anyone, even Demon Kings, could be captivated by them. The slice of life series is such a pleasant read. Every chapter offers a delightful new vignette into fantasy world life with reincarnated cats. The fact that Square Enix also put together some extra embellishments for the release, like color page edges, makes the series’ release feel extra special too.
