Day four of the trial of Yorgen Fenech over the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia began today with lead investigator Keith Arnaud continuing his testimony before the jury.Arnaud walked jurors through the police investigation, focusing on statements made by state witness Melvin Theuma and the evidence investigators gathered following his arrest. One of the key clarifications made in court was that, although former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri was repeatedly mentioned in recordings secretly made by Theuma, Schembri is not implicated in the murder, Arnaud stressed. The jury also heard that Kenneth Camilleri told investigators he had been asked by Schembri to calm Theuma down as the middleman became increasingly anxious after learning that hitman Vince Muscat wanted to speak to police. According to Arnaud, Camilleri believed Theuma’s concerns were political rather than related to the Caruana Galizia murder itself.Arnaud told the court that Theuma began secretly recording conversations with Fenech after repeatedly passing on money to the Degiorgio brothers and becoming increasingly anxious, believing Fenech was a powerful figure with influential connections. The investigator also testified that Theuma kept a photograph of himself with Keith Schembri, allegedly telling police he had done so because he “wanted to blackmail him”. The photo was taken on the day Theuma received what has been described in court as a phantom government job.According to Arnaud, another recurring theme in the recordings was Theuma’s fear that he had been “betrayed”, a word that repeatedly surfaced as his anxiety grew. The trial continues.•
