Sean Dyche tells Thomas Tuchel the bravest team selection he can make for England vs Mexico

Wait 5 sec.

Sean Dyche was surprised Djed Spence made the England squad – but the bravest thing to do now is to start him against Mexico.Thomas Tuchel has a major decision over who to deploy at right-back for the Three Lions’ last-16 clash at the iconic Azteca Stadium.Tuchel has a massive decision over whether he starts Spence against MexicoGettyEngland’s first-choice right-back, Reece James, started the first two World Cup games before suffering a worrying injury. The Chelsea captain picked up a hamstring strain during the goalless draw with Ghana and has missed the past two matches.England were already a full-back down prior to James’ injury, after Tino Livramento pulled out on the eve of the tournament.Jarell Quansah, who typically plays in central defence, was then given the nod over the only other recognised and available right-back in the squad, Spence, for the Panama victory but then also sustained a fitness issue. As a result, Spence was handed the opportunity to make the position his own against DR Congo, but looked far from assured. The Tottenham defender received a rollicking from Tuchel mid-match, and was later replaced at right-back by Declan Rice. However, speaking on World Cup Weekender With Jonny Owen, Dyche claimed the bravest thing Tuchel can do is keep Spence at right-back.“I said on our first show [that I was] surprised Djed Spence made it, not because he’s not a good player, by the way; I just didn’t think he was England-ready for this sort of tournament,” he told talkSPORT.“But that’s the manager’s job and his staff, and they’ve chosen him. Then I said he should play the last game, which I believe.“What is the point in taking a right-back there if you’re not gonna play him in their natural slot?Tuchel was fuming with Spence for not going forward from a throw-inGETTY“Don’t think it went as well as they’d have hoped – not in my opinion, sort of Tuchel screaming at him during the game, which suggested he wasn’t doing the job that he wanted him to do. A lot of talk with Rice going out there [to replace him].“I mean, the challenge from a manager’s point of view, from chatting with staff about this, you’d be going, ‘Yeah, could we do that?’“Yes, we could of course, but then we would, not necessarily weakened, but we change the dynamic of the midfield, and the midfield has been really strong, I think, so far this tournament.“There’s top, top players in there. So it’s like, do you risk changing that dynamic when that’s gonna be really important?“I’m not saying full-backs are not important. Of course it is, but [Ezri] Konsa I think could do a job. He’s done it at times for Villa.“I don’t think it’s a natural turn, but he can do it. He moves well, you know, so I mean that would be that that would be in the debate.”Hardest thing is to do nothingWith noise continuing to build over England’s team selection, Dyche added: “The hardest thing as a manager, and I say this a lot in talks that I do, is the hardest thing is to do nothing at all. Rice and Konsa are two of the less orthodox choices for right-backAFP“When the noise is building. It’s fair to say that Tuchel could go, listen, to Djed Spence, listen, we believe in you, we trust you, we just want you to do this, that and the other, and just maybe hold your position a bit longer, or whatever tactical little nuances, little details, reflect on it, and they might even go again. “And that’s the bravest thing as a manager, you know, is to do nothing.“When everyone’s making a huge noise about what you should be doing, the bravest thing often is, the bravest doesn’t mean it’s the right thing by the way, I must make that clear, but the bravest thing is to do nothing, and stand by your players and what they stand for as individuals and as a team. “Not saying you should do that, but I’m just saying that is a brave thing to do. “I don’t think you will do that, but I’m still giving an example of when I’ve done it myself and gone, right and wrong by the way, with my staff, debating who we should play, and I’ve stood strong and gone, nope, the same team’s playing. Even when they’ve been going, no, we’ve got to change it.Rice has featured in three of England’s World Cup matches in North America so far“And that’s a very tough thing to do.”Konsa to come in?Dyche, meanwhile, would opt for something different if he was in the England dug-out, which would see Ezri Konsa take over the position.“That is the biggest management decision,” The former Burnley, Everton, and Nottingham Forest manager continued.“Does he stay true to the player he thought was going to be the player while he is there, which is Spence? I can only imagine that is why he took him. I don’t see the point if he didn’t.“I don’t think he will, though. I think he will change it. He will probably go with Pickford. I think Konsa might go out there [at right-back].“He has done a steady, solid job. Especially if it is more of an altitude thing. I would maybe look at the team going high press, but if they break the press, then you have got to drop.“You re-bank, and you form a unit. Then you look at the counter from there. That is a defensive unit. [John] Stones would then come in. [Marc] Guehi plays. [Nico] O’Reilly plays. I would stick with [Bukayo] Saka. “The reason is I wouldn’t want to take Rice out of there. That is a powerful three in there.“[Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Gordon is a toss-up. I would go either one because I would be looking for the team to counter with pace. “I would probably stick with Rashford for this one to start anyway. Then [Jude] Bellingham and [Harry] Kane, who have to play, from what is available.“That is what I would do rather than dislodging Rice.”World Cup WhatsAppDon't miss an update from talkSPORT in our dedicated World Cup WhatsApp channel.Search for ‘talkSPORT World Cup’ in your ‘Updates’ tab on WhatsApp and we’ll drop the proper, unfiltered football chat straight to your lock screen—no fluff, just pure talkSPORT energy. It’s where you’ll find out all the new rules to watch out for, England and Scotland reaction and big match player ratings.
