How to Tell a Pullback From a Trend Reversal on XAUUSDGoldCAPITALCOM:XAUUSDGold_Compass_ProGold's recent price action provides a useful example of why a strong move in the opposite direction does not automatically mean that the trend has reversed. On this 15-minute XAUUSD chart, price experienced a sharp bearish impulse from around the 4,470 area, briefly reaching approximately 4,365 before buyers stepped in. The rebound was significant, taking Gold back toward 4,440. But the size of a rebound alone is not enough to confirm a reversal. So what should traders look for? 1. Look at the structure before the move Before calling a reversal, identify the sequence of highs and lows. Following a bearish impulse, the first recovery can simply be a retracement as buyers absorb the initial selling pressure. 2. Watch whether previous structure is reclaimed In this example, the 4,440-4,450 area is particularly interesting. Price recovered strongly from the low but has so far struggled around this region. A recovery becomes more meaningful when price can break above an important previous structure and then hold above it. 3. Don't confuse momentum with confirmation The initial rebound from 4,365 was aggressive. That tells us buyers reacted strongly, but it does not necessarily tell us that buyers have regained control of the broader structure. Strong candles show momentum. Structure provides confirmation. 4. Watch what happens on the next pullback This is often one of the most useful clues. If buyers establish a higher low and subsequently break the previous swing high, the case for a genuine bullish reversal becomes stronger. If the recovery fails and price starts producing lower highs again, the rebound was more likely a corrective move within the bearish structure. The key lesson A reversal is a process, not a single candle. Instead of trying to predict the exact bottom, traders can wait for the market to provide evidence through a change in structure. On Gold especially, where volatility can create very aggressive rebounds, separating reaction from confirmation can help avoid entering too early.
