The Steve Asmussen barn had a lot to celebrate this past weekend, winning a trio of winners on Saturday's card, including the GI Spinaway Stakes with BC Stables, Wattswood Stables, Bob Albritton, Jay Graham and David Baggett's Summer Starlet (City of Light). The 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' won the 7-furlong Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' event by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:11.72.“She came out of it good,” said Scott Blasi, assistant trainer to Asmussen. “She's an impressive filly.”Summer Starlet previously won her 6 1/2-furlong debut by 6 1/2 lengths on Aug. 8 at Saratoga.“She's one of those fillies that continues to develop physically like you'd want one to,” said Blasi. “I think she is growing, going to continue to grow and we're just going to take the best care of her that we can.”Also winning for Asmussen this weekend at the Spa, Scott Dilworth, Evan Dilworth and Randy Andrews' homebred Pharocity (American Pharoah), named a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard', captured his seven-furlong debut by 5 3/4 lengths. Sophomore Preside (Tiz the Law) topped a nine-furlong allowance versus elders for Spendthrift Farm, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and LVD Racing.Despite all the momentum, the Asmussen barn did experience a setback with Jersey Girl Stakes winner Goodall (Yaupon), who was scratched from Sunday's GIII Prioress. She finished third behind Explora in her latest start in the GI Test Stakes on Aug. 8.“She will need 60-90 days off, I hope she can make it back [100% for a 2027 campaign,” said Spendthrift Farm's stallion sales manager Mark Toothaker in an X post on Sunday. “I do know that Spendthrift Farm will do right by her so that gives us a great chance.”Also drawing some attention on Sunday morning, Winchell Thoroughbreds' Magnitude (Not This Time) worked a half-mile in :51.60 over the Oklahoma dirt training track.“He went by himself, first work back, it was easy,” Blasi said. The 4-year-old was completing his first breeze back since a sixth in the GI Whitney on Aug. 8. He previously won the G1 Dubai World Cup and GI Stephen Foster among a four stakes winning streak.Asmussen has previously stated he plans to train Magnitude up to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.
