Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Ranipet MLA I. Thahira in the Assembly raised a serious demand to shut down a JK Tyre manufacturing unit in her constituency over allegations of pollution. It emerged that the company has no such factory at Ranipet, and the MLA was referring to a local tyre retreading or melting unit. While the Industries Minister intervened, Opposition members poked fun over the allegations of a non-existent company in the region. JK Tyres even issued a statement stating it does not have a plant at Ranipet but has one in Sriperumbudur.Playing favouritesUS Ambassador to India Sergio Gor appears to have developed quite a liking for two key members of the Union Cabinet — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.Speaking at a recent event in New Delhi, Gor named the duo as his ‘favourite ministers’. Turning to Goyal, whom he called a ‘dear friend’, the envoy quipped, “If you can’t get hold of me, reach out to Piyush and he’ll arrange it”.Goyal, however, was quick to point out the potential hazard of such high-level praise. “I’m worried about calling you a friend,” the Minister remarked in a lighter vein. “If you make such comments, I’ll have half of these people at my office looking for US visa appointments,” drawing laughter from the audience. The banter is especially interesting given the ongoing delays in US visa processing. With the State Department recently adjusting appointment schedules globally for consular officer training, applicant backlogs have only grown.Whether Goyal was simply playing to the gallery or using humour to nudge the embassy on a pressing public grievance is open to interpretation.Turbulence or accident? What began as a report on a turbulence encounter has acquired a new dimension, with the preliminary investigation into Air India flight AI2379 recording that neither the flight crew nor the air traffic control reported adverse weather during the altitude upset. The Airbus A320-251N was flying from Phuket to Delhi on August 4 with 145 people onboard. The occurrence was initially notified to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) by the Airports Authority of India as a turbulence encounter, with some people onboard sustaining injuries. However, after reaching the airport, collecting evidence, and assessing the injuries, the AAIB classified the occurrence as an accident and ordered an investigation to determine the probable causes and contributory factors. The report said the aircraft was cruising at FL360 in the Upper Bhubaneshwar Sector.Weather forecasts indicated scattered and broken clouds, with temporary forecasts of light thunderstorms and rain later.
