The Nationalist Party has called for Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg to resign following Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal in the trial over the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.“The Attorney General needs to go today,” PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut said during a press conference on Saturday.Sammut launched a scathing attack on Buttigieg, accusing her of being both incompetent and corrupt and claiming that she repeatedly makes mistakes in cases involving certain individuals.“I would be charitable to describe her as merely incompetent. She is corrupt and uses incompetence as a cover,” he charged. He also criticised the Attorney General for reportedly being abroad during the trial and when the verdict was delivered, describing her absence as “irresponsible”.Fenech, who had been accused of complicity in Caruana Galizia’s murder, was found not guilty by a jury on Wednesday.Sammut also turned his attention to Neville Gafa and government official Jason Micallef over comments and social media posts following the verdict. He highlighted posts by Gafa targeting members of the Caruana Galizia family, including one in which he described Daphne’s sister as a “sewer rat” and another showing her children following the verdict with the caption: “Have they seen a ghost?”Sammut argued that Prime Minister Robert Abela cannot claim to respect Caruana Galizia while people associated with Labour continue attacking the murdered journalist and her family.“If he really has respect, these people need to go,” he said.Fellow PN MP Michael Piccinino, who joined Sammut at the press conference, meanwhile renewed calls for the government to implement recommendations from the Daphne Caruana Galizia public inquiry.Piccinino specifically called for legislation targeting unexplained wealth and the obstruction of justice, accusing the government of dragging its feet on reforms for too long. What do you make of the PN’s demands?•
