The Labour Party has hit back at the Nationalist Party following its call for Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg to resign, accusing the Opposition of resorting to attacks against Malta’s institutions.In a statement issued following the PN’s Saturday morning press conference, Labour said the aftermath of the Yorgen Fenech verdict requires “seriousness and prudence” rather than insults directed at the country’s institutions.The party also called on Opposition leader Alex Borg to distance himself from comments made by members of his parliamentary group if he wants to be taken seriously when speaking about the national interest.“This is not the time for partisan attacks,” Labour said, arguing that the verdict should not be exploited for “political convenience”.The statement comes after PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut called for Buttigieg’s immediate resignation, declaring that “the Attorney General needs to go today” and levelling a series of accusations against her.Labour said it fully supports the government’s “measured and responsible” position following the court judgment related to the jury’s verdict in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case.The party also took aim directly at Borg, claiming that unlike Labour, the PN had prepared “two scripts” for the possible outcomes of the trial.“The Opposition Leader, Alex Borg, appeared so caught between two versions that, at one point, he seemed to be reading from one script, only to contradict himself by quoting from another, moments later,” Labour charged.Labour concluded by saying its position remains to support the government in pursuing the truth while respecting Malta’s institutions and the independence of the judicial process.“Truth, justice and strong institutions do not belong to any political party.
