Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests have another dining option back in action, and this one returned with some noticeable changes. The outdoor Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge has officially reopened following more than two months of construction. Disney began work on the patio in late June, temporarily taking the popular outdoor seating area out of service while crews made several upgrades.Credit: Brittany DiCologero, ITMNow, the construction walls are gone, the tables are back, and guests can once again grab a seat outside The Hollywood Brown Derby. But Disney didn’t simply reopen the same patio guests remember. The lounge now features a large covered structure over the dining area, along with ceiling fans, new lighting fixtures, and other changes designed to make the outdoor space much more comfortable in Florida’s unpredictable weather. For a restaurant that already offers one of the more relaxing places to stop inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the completed project could make the lounge an even more appealing break from a busy park day.Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge Is Back OpenConstruction on the outdoor lounge began on June 29, kicking off a project that would eventually stretch through the remainder of the summer. At the time, Disney closed off the outdoor patio while work got underway. The walk-up bar operation also temporarily moved to the former Starring Rolls location as crews began making changes around the Brown Derby.Early signs suggested that Disney planned to build some type of permanent covering over the patio. That became even clearer by the middle of July.On July 17, crews had installed new support columns around the seating area. Concrete footings around those columns pointed toward a much more substantial structure than a simple collection of umbrellas or temporary coverings.Over the following weeks, the new patio gradually started taking shape.By September 1, most of the major pieces were visible. The awning had arrived, along with ceiling fans and decorative lanterns. However, Disney still had construction barriers surrounding the area, meaning guests had to wait a little longer before they could actually use it.That wait is finally over. The patio has reopened, and guests are already dining underneath the completed structure.Disney Added a Large Cover Over the Outdoor Seating AreaThe biggest difference is immediately obvious.Previously, the Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge offered outdoor seating that was considerably more exposed to the elements. That can become a problem at Walt Disney World, especially during the summer months.Central Florida heat alone can make sitting outside uncomfortable. Add afternoon thunderstorms and intense sunshine, and outdoor dining sometimes becomes a gamble.Disney has now given the patio considerably more protection.Credit: DisneyA large red awning stretches across the outdoor dining area, providing full coverage over most of the tables below. The design also fits naturally with the existing Hollywood Brown Derby building rather than looking like a completely separate addition. The red covering matches the canopy located near the restaurant’s entrance, helping the new construction blend into the established look of the building. That matters at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where The Hollywood Brown Derby has long carried a very specific aesthetic inspired by classic Hollywood.Disney could have simply installed a basic patio cover and called the project finished. Instead, the additional details help the structure look like it belongs there.Ceiling Fans Should Make a Big DifferenceThe shade might be the most noticeable upgrade, but guests dining outside will probably appreciate another addition just as much.Disney installed ceiling fans underneath the new structure.Anyone who has visited Walt Disney World during the warmer months knows how important airflow can be. Even when guests escape direct sunlight, Florida humidity can make an outdoor meal uncomfortable. The ceiling fans should help keep air moving throughout the patio while guests eat or stop for drinks.Lantern-style light fixtures have also been installed underneath the awning. The fixtures feature decorative scrollwork that complements other design elements around The Hollywood Brown Derby.Taken together, the changes make the area feel more like a permanent outdoor extension of the restaurant instead of an uncovered collection of tables along the walkway. And after months of construction, Disney has brought the furniture back as well. The Reopened Patio Has a Familiar Hollywood LookThe completed seating area includes round tables covered with white tablecloths.Disney has also used different seating styles throughout the patio. Black metal chairs sit along the outer portion of the space, while red leather chairs with decorative metal frames appear closer to the center. The red chairs work particularly well with the new awning overhead. The finished space still feels unmistakably connected to The Hollywood Brown Derby, but it now offers considerably more protection than guests had before construction began.Credit: Erica Lauren, Inside the MagicThere is even one table outside the primary covered area for guests who would rather sit without the new protection overhead. For everyone else, the new setup means guests can enjoy outdoor dining without worrying quite as much about direct sunlight or a sudden Florida shower interrupting their meal. The Main Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant Never ClosedOne important distinction is that this project did not mean the entire Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant closed for the summer. The main indoor dining room remained open throughout construction. The work specifically affected the outdoor Brown Derby Lounge area. That allowed Disney to continue serving guests inside while crews worked just outside the building.Still, losing the lounge for more than two months removed an outdoor dining option from a park where guests frequently look for somewhere to escape the crowds and sit down for a while. Its return restores that option while giving guests a substantially upgraded version of the patio. The Location Makes the Lounge a Great People-Watching SpotPart of the appeal of the Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge has always been its location. The seating area sits directly beside a busy pedestrian walkway inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Guests can stop for food or drinks while watching the activity around the park without committing to the experience of sitting inside the main restaurant. That hasn’t changed with the renovation.Credit: Lee (myfrozenlife), FlickrGuests are once again seated just off the nearby walkway, making the reopened patio a convenient people-watching location. The difference is that they can now do it beneath a large covered structure. That could become particularly appealing as temperatures begin cooling later in the year. Instead of retreating indoors, guests have another comfortable outdoor option where they can slow down before heading back into the park. The Project Took More Than Two Months to CompleteLooking back at the timeline shows just how much work Disney put into what might initially have seemed like a relatively straightforward patio project.Construction started June 29.By July 17, the support columns and concrete footings were taking shape. The project continued throughout August, and by September 1, the new awning, ceiling fans, and lanterns were largely installed. However, barriers remained around the patio as crews finished the work. Now, just days later, those barriers have disappeared and guests have returned. From the beginning of construction to reopening, the project took a little more than two months. The result is not a completely redesigned restaurant or a flashy new attraction, but it is the type of practical improvement that guests may notice during an actual day at the park.Disney’s Hollywood Studios Guests Have Another Outdoor Option AgainThe Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge reopening comes at a good time for guests heading into the fall season at Walt Disney World.Instead of simply restoring the previous outdoor setup, Disney used the closure to make the patio more functional throughout the year.Credit: Jeremy Thompson, FlickrThe new awning provides extensive shade and weather protection. Ceiling fans can help make warmer days more comfortable. Decorative lanterns and coordinated furniture keep the classic Hollywood atmosphere intact. Most importantly, guests can actually use the space again. After spending the summer behind construction walls, the Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge patio is officially serving guests once more, and the finished version looks much better equipped to handle everything Florida weather can throw at it.The post Disney Reopens Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge After Months-Long Closure With Major Upgrade appeared first on Inside the Magic.
