More than 180 Maltese musicians, members, families and supporters are heading to Sardinia this September as Birkirkara’s St Helen’s Band Club celebrates a major milestone with its 10th international musical tour.The band will travel to Quartu Sant’Elena between 10th and 15th September, where it will join the local community for celebrations dedicated to Saint Helena – the patron saint shared by both communities.And there will be plenty of Maltese festa spirit making its way across the Mediterranean.During the trip, St Helen’s Band will provide four musical services, performing a varied programme of vocal and instrumental music alongside the traditional, lively marches synonymous with Malta’s festa culture.One particularly Maltese moment will see a Mass celebrated in Maltese with the participation of the band, organised especially for the contingent travelling from the islands.However, the highlight of the visit is expected to come during the solemn procession of Saint Helena, when the Birkirkara band will provide musical accompaniment as the patron saint’s statue is carried through the streets of Quartu Sant’Elena.The occasion will bring together two communities separated by the Mediterranean but united by their devotion to the same saint.For St Helen’s Band Club, the trip also marks its latest effort to take Malta’s musical heritage and festa traditions beyond the islands.And with more than 180 people making the journey for the club’s milestone 10th international tour, Sardinia is about to get a sizeable taste of a Birkirkara festa.Best of luck to everyone making the journey!•
