Maltese residents are among the European Union’s biggest spenders when going on holiday, according to figures published by Eurostat.The 2024 data shows that Maltese residents spent an average of €131 per night on tourism trips, putting Malta fifth among the EU countries featured in the ranking.That’s comfortably above the EU average of €97 per night.Luxembourg topped the list, with residents spending €176 per night, followed by Austria at €170, Sweden at €140 and Ireland at €133. Malta came next at €131.At the other end of the ranking, residents of Greece spent the least at €47 per night, followed by Czechia at €55, Poland at €57 and Lithuania at €59.Importantly, the figures are based on how much residents of each country spend while travelling, rather than how much tourists spend when visiting that country.The expenditure includes money spent before or during a trip on things such as transport, accommodation, restaurants and activities, while excluding durable and valuable goods.So while Malta might be small, its residents appear to be among Europe’s bigger spenders when it comes to their holidays.What do you make of these statistics?•
