Gina Carano’s future in Star Wars has been the subject of speculation for years, but Lucasfilm appears to have finally delivered its clearest answer yet.Gina Carano’s FiringCarano, who played the ex-Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune, a close ally of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and a fan-favorite character in The Mandalorian (2019), was fired by Lucasfilm in February 2021 after a series of controversial social media posts.But the decision immediately raised a big question: What would happen to Cara Dune?Credit: LucasfilmDid Cara Dune Return to Star Wars?Rather than recasting the character, Lucasfilm left Cara Dune out of the Disney+ series entirely. Her absence was addressed in the third season in 2023, but the character never made any meaningful returns, not even in other Star Wars media, including novels, comics, and animation.Carano eventually took legal action against Disney and Lucasfilm. In 2024, she filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination and sex discrimination, arguing that she had been punished for expressing her political views while male Mandalorian co-stars had not faced the same consequences. The lawsuit was settled in August 2025, with the terms remaining confidential.Credit: LucasfilmMore importantly for Star Wars fans, Lucasfilm took an unusually conciliatory tone in its statement, praising Carano’s professionalism and saying that, with the lawsuit concluded, it looked forward to identifying opportunities to work with her in the future.The comments seemingly left the door open for Carano to return to Star Wars, fueling speculation that her relationship with Lucasfilm had been repaired.Then, with Jon Favreau directing The Mandalorian & Grogu, some fans began wondering whether the settlement could ultimately lead to Carano’s return as Cara Dune in the film.Carano also revealed in 2026 that she had reconnected with Favreau and Dave Filoni, further encouraging speculation that the door might have been left open. But, as we now know, that never happened. And now, the character has even been left out of a new LEGO Star Wars special.Cara Dune Has Been ErasedSeveral actors from The Mandalorian have returned to voice their respective characters, including Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze, Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, Nick Nolte as Kuiil, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Taika Waititi as IG-11/IG-12, Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, and Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth.Meanwhile, however, other roles have been recast, including Din Djarin/The Mandalorian, the Client, Luke Skywalker, and Greef Karga, with Gavin Hammon, Flula Borg, Eric Bauza, and Carl Lumbly, respectively, now voicing those characters. But Cara Dune is nowhere to be found.Lucasfilm had the perfect opportunity to recast the character for a project specifically built around revisiting the events of the first three seasons. But instead, the studio chose to leave her out altogether, which is the strongest indication yet that there are no plans to revive Cara Dune — and, consequently, no apparent plans to bring Carano herself back to Star Wars.For now, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian has seemingly closed the door on the character.LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is now streaming on Disney+.
