Scientists have reconstructed sounds of nine extinct Jurassic insects. Fossilized insect wings preserved sound-producing structures for analysis. Modern insect studies and computer simulations aided this reconstruction. Some insects produced pure tone calls around five kilohertz. One species may have communicated using ultrasonic frequencies.
