It's like clockwork: If you give to one, expect for others to follow. The only person who the owner of the company I work for gives a donation to is a customer she has worked with for years who is a representative from the American Cancer Society. There are a number of events that the chapter in our area runs and they show all of the donors in the event pamphlet. I have become so wary of people who walk in because "someone got into a workplace accident" or "we set up this charity and are looking for donations from local businesses!" When I tell them that I need to see proof of a tax ID/EIN number to verify, all of a sudden the mood changes. They look at me like I just spoke a foreign language, yet they are the one representing a supposed cause and are so ill prepared. Denying these people of what they are asking for reveals them to be the most entitled lot. When I tell people we have reached our threshold of donations, hand them back their paper, then wish them luck, yup, I am the devil incarnate because I didn't dole out "free stuff". Probably the funniest showcase of entitlement and disorganization was when my co-worker called me that this woman showed up and was demanding gift cards and free stuff for a huge raffle that was today. He was like, "Who is this wacko, and did you know she was coming?" The reason he called me was because this person said they showed up on Wednesday when I usually worked with my boss. The only exception was that I came in later that particular day and my boss encountered this person. I managed to get a hold of my boss and my boss confirmed, yes, she spoke to this person, but they told her they would return another time because they were just trying to get ideas of what to offer for a raffle. No mention of when said raffle was taking place, she just left. When this person returned it was Saturday, and now they are blasting my co-worker and making a scene like she isn't being delivered what she was promised. My boss tried talking to this lady, only she refused when my co-worker handed her the phone. Then she turns to my co-worker and tries to goad him into going over our boss's head. He had enough of her and sent her out the door.
