Retired judge Silvio Meli has died at the age of 72, following a long career in Malta’s legal and judicial fields.Meli studied law at the University of Malta and later pursued further studies in areas including human rights and European law.After working in private practice, he served within the Office of the Attorney General before joining the judiciary. He was appointed magistrate in 2000 and became a judge of the Superior Courts in 2011, before retiring in April 2019.Beyond the courtroom, Meli also taught law both in Malta and abroad and had a particular interest in legal philosophy, fundamental rights and European Union law.He was also active in sports administration and served as President of the Aquatic Sports Association.Following his retirement, Meli dedicated much of his time to writing legal books, leaving behind works aimed at students, professionals and others interested in the law.His latest book, Judgecraft and the Art of Rhetoric, was published just last month by Kite Group.His funeral will take place on Thursday at the Collegiate Church of St George Martyr in Qormi at 8.30am.Condolences to his family and loved ones.Cover photo via President Myriam Spiteri Debono•
