Stumbling across a secret room in your house isn’t always relegated to fiction, as TikToker Monica McManus recently shared. In a post that is frankly amazing to watch, she walked her viewers on TikTok through two secret rooms that she accessed right from her daughter’s bedroom. Unsurprisingly, the post went on to get over 484K views. In the post, Monica explained, “My husband and I found a secret room in our house.” She then walked her viewers into a bedroom and to a ladder that seemed to lead to a false balcony. She noted, “It’s in my daughter’s room. There is this little pathway, and then…” She then approached what looked like a utility panel, only to open it to another panel with a lock on it. “Okay, this opens. It should be locked, but it’s actually not locked.” Monica pushed on it, and it opened to a small room, complete with a built-in wall closet and another ladder. “It’s this whole space,” she said, and then, as she climbed the ladder, announced, “And then there’s another space up here.” Above was another low-ceiling room. In the first secret room, Monica pointed to a wood panel on the floor and told her viewers, “We think that this was a spiral staircase, because right down from here, there’s, like, a laundry closet. Might have been a kids’ room up here or their playroom.” The Princess Tower Monica’s viewers took the comments, expressing everything from wonder to excitement, and total dread. Monica told PEOPLE, “My husband was actually the one who figured it out. He came home one day and said, ‘I think there’s another floor to the house.’ ” She adds, “I laughed and told him it was probably just a storage space and that the windows were decorative. But he kept insisting something didn’t add up.” He eventually climbed through a small opening in their daughter’s bedroom, and that is when they realized he was actually right. Per PEOPLE, Monica said, “Once we realized it was an actual hidden room, we couldn’t believe it. It felt like something out of a movie.” On TikTok, another couple who were restoring a Victorian house were sent a letter, guiding them to multiple hidden spaces. Since Monica and her husband were expecting another child at the time, the idea of having extra square footage was incredibly tempting. The outlet notes that she mentioned to her viewers that she would have loved to turn the space into a workspace or a studio, though she was always cautious about the safety of letting children play up there. After she officially notified the landlord, the reality of the situation set in. “They confirmed that we’re actually not allowed to use the space because of safety concerns,” Monica explains. “So for now, it’s more of a fun discovery than an extra room we can enjoy.” While the internet came up with plenty of dark theories about the room’s history, the truth is much less mysterious. The couple reportedly learned that the space was built by a previous owner specifically to serve as a children’s playroom. “My husband and I are pretty optimistic people, though, and we always imagined it was simply a sweet little playroom for kids,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s funny how the same space can spark such different stories depending on who’s looking at it.” In a different discovery, a TikToker believed she found a cute reading nook, only to be told by the community that she found a panic room. Even if they can’t use it right now, it is certainly a cool piece of history to have tucked away in their own home. As Monica puts it, “If our kids were older, it would make the most magical little hideaway. Maybe one day, but not right now.”
