CHWY Earnings — Boring or Explosive?Chewy, Inc. Class ABATS:CHWYheavydiligenceCHWY may be one of the strangest earnings setups I’m watching this week. At first glance, I thought this might be the weakest of our earnings plays. Then I zoomed out. The weekly chart shows the entirety of CHWY’s public trading history and the potential for big moves, and the daily chart shows an interesting pattern around prior earnings: periods of relatively uneventful trading mixed with significant gaps and sustained directional runs. That does not mean historical earnings can predict the direction of the next report. It does tell me something else: When CHWY materially surprises expectations, the repricing can be substantial. Current price is around $23.66, sitting inside a fairly compressed structural area heading into earnings. My current map separates a normal earnings reaction from an actual expectation-breaking repricing. Blue — Bullish Repricing / Expectation Break This is the outlier bullish scenario. A normal earnings beat probably isn't enough. For CHWY to make a move toward the $28–$29 area, I would expect the report or guidance to materially change how the market is valuing the company. Things I would be watching include customer growth, Autoship performance, margins and forward guidance. The important distinction is: This isn't my normal bullish scenario. This represents the market deciding that its previous expectations were materially too low. If that happens, I would not expect the move to necessarily finish with the initial earnings gap. Green — Normal Bullish Continuation This is the more conventional bullish outcome. Positive earnings reaction → initial repricing → pullback → structure holds → continuation. The pullback is important. I am not interested in blindly chasing an earnings gap. I want to see whether buyers defend the new price after the initial excitement settles down. If they do, the $24.50–$25.50 area becomes a reasonable structural battlefield for continuation. Yellow — Muted / Directionless I intentionally left this scenario off the chart because adding another path would make the map unnecessarily cluttered. But it absolutely exists. CHWY could report perfectly acceptable numbers without giving the market enough reason to materially change its valuation. Price could simply continue negotiating around the existing $23–$24.50 structure while implied volatility collapses. This could genuinely be the most boring earnings play of the week. And if that happens: No trade may be the correct trade. Red — Orderly Bearish Reaction A disappointing report does not automatically mean the stock needs to collapse. The first major downside structure sits around the $22 area. If earnings disappoint but don't fundamentally alter the company's longer-term story, I would expect this area to have a reasonable chance of becoming an important decision point. This represents a normal bearish repricing rather than panic. Orange — Bearish Overreaction This is where things get interesting. If CHWY experiences a violent downside reaction substantially beyond what the report appears to justify, I would begin looking for the kind of setup I personally prefer: The post-earnings overreaction trade. A move toward roughly $20–$21 would put price considerably below the current structural range. But simply reaching that area isn't enough. I would want to see selling exhaustion, stabilization, reclaim behavior and new intraday structure before considering the other side of the move. I don't buy something simply because it fell a lot. Price has to show me that the selling is actually losing control. What I’m Watching in the Report The headline EPS number isn't the entire story here. I’ll be paying particular attention to: Active customer growth New customer acquisition Autoship growth Gross and adjusted EBITDA margins Consumer-spending commentary Forward guidance CHWY's business has been improving in several important areas, but the market clearly isn't currently assigning the company the type of valuation it received during stronger growth periods. That creates an interesting earnings equation. If the report largely confirms existing expectations, we may get very little. If the report materially changes those expectations, the historical chart shows that CHWY is perfectly capable of repricing aggressively. The Lesson Before Earnings Even Happen This setup already reminded me of something I know but still occasionally fail to do soon enough: Zoom out. The hourly gave me a trade setup. The daily gave me context. The weekly changed how I viewed the opportunity entirely. Higher timeframe first. Then we work our way down. I still won't predict the earnings print. I'll prepare for the possibilities and trade the reaction if the market gives me something worth trading.
