Gianni Infantino will remain as FIFA president for now, despite acknowledging mistakes with his ill-fated World Cup plans.Infantino has increasingly lost support and faced calls for resignation after the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal.Infantino is set to stay on as FIFA presidentGettyIt would have seen a merge of the commercial and operational arms at FIFA into a body funded by private equity.All 211 Member Associations were even offered $40million (£30m) by Infantino as an incentive to back the project.The 56-year-old has been accused of ‘blackmail’ by the Jordanian FA president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein over endorsing his re-election.And FIFA were forced to deny claims that Morocco were offered the World Cup final in exchange for an endorsement of Infantino.Now, in a leaked letter after crisis talks in Morocco, Infantino apologised for the errors made with FFE but showed no sign of backing down.The letter reads: “We acknowledge mistakes were made in the process of the proposed establishment of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE).“It was certainly not the intention for the FIFA Council and FIFA Member Associations to feel excluded from the process and it should have been handled differently. “We acknowledge that errors were also made after the proposal was leaked to media. We sincerely apologise for these errors and commit to them not happening again. “With this in mind, we will conduct a necessary review, and a report will be presented to the FIFA Council at its next scheduled meeting.”It added: “Furthermore, as already known, the proposal, which would have been subject to the approval of the FIFA Member Associations and the FIFA Council, is now off the table. View Tweet: https://t.co/rGKcW0zFjP“With the project withdrawn, FIFA will no longer tolerate any attacks on its integrity, good governance and due process and will take all necessary measures to protect and safeguard its name and reputation.”Infantino’s position as FIFA president has also been backed by a media release published on the governing body’s website.A statement read: “Following a meeting in Rabat, Morocco, the FIFA Secretary General and members of the FIFA Management Board in attendance reaffirmed their full support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, as the only official elected by the 211 FIFA Member Associations.“In turn, the FIFA President reiterated his full support for the FIFA Secretary General and the FIFA Administration for their necessary and outstanding work in the delivery of his vision.”talkSPORT have reported that the UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has discussed whether to ask all UEFA members that have backed Infantino to revoke their support.Member nations have also threatened to boycott tournaments in a bid to oust Infantino.
