The jury in Yorgen Fenech’s trial today heard testimony from his former personal doctor, Dr Adrian Vella, who told the court that Fenech once declared: “If I go down… they’ll all come down with me.”Vella, who said he had known Fenech for 32 years and described their relationship as being “practically family”, was giving evidence about events that unfolded in November 2019, shortly after confessed murder middleman Melvin Theuma was arrested and just days before Fenech himself was arrested while attempting to leave Malta aboard his yacht.The doctor told jurors that Fenech had asked him to collect a number of documents from the home of former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri. According to Vella, Schembri pointed him towards several sheets of paper, which he collected without reading before driving them to Fenech’s residence in Portomaso.When Vella arrived, he found police officers stationed outside the property together with Fenech and his lawyer. He said he immediately handed the folded papers to the lawyer because he was frightened.According to Vella, Fenech appeared highly agitated and struggled to even read the documents.The doctor said Fenech then went into another room, returned with blank sheets of paper and began writing frantically.It was during this time, Vella testified, that Fenech started talking to himself and said:“If I go down… they’ll all come down with me.”Vella also recalled that Fenech’s wife arrived home with their children shortly afterwards, prompting him to quickly put the papers aside.The testimony forms part of the ongoing trial in which Yorgen Fenech is pleading not guilty to complicity in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.•
