France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in France near Albertville, Savoy, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, at 11:57 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Military Applications Division - Earth and Environmental Science (CEA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 2.7, and the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at magnitude 2.9.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Bellentre (pop. 860) located 0 km from the epicenter, Macot-la-Plagne (pop. 1,700) 4 km away, Aime (pop. 3,500) 5 km away, Bourg-Saint-Maurice (pop. 8,100) 7 km away, and Seez (pop. 2,100) 9 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Moutiers (pop. 4,900) located 17 km from the epicenter.
