After five years of unfulfilling teases, its cinematic universe is finally ready to unveil the new X-Men: the MCU already has its Jean Grey, and the rest of the mutant team seems to be falling in beside her. After Jean’s debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Deadline reported that another telepath, Emma Frost, would appear in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot. With these two rivals poised to face off in live action for the first time, curiosity naturally turned to the third point of their love triangle, Scott Summers (aka Cyclops). Casting any X-Men character is a tall order for Marvel at this stage, but Cyclops might be one of the trickiest to get right. If director Jake Schreier really means to tell a more comic-accurate story with the team, then Cyclops will probably be the star of the new X-Men. Fox’s trilogy might have focused more on Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but the comics tend to focus on Cyclops as both the X-Men’s leader and as the center of this universe. Like Wolverine, however, Cyclops can be a prickly guy. Heartstopper’s Kit Connor is reportedly in talks to star as Scott Summers in Schreier’s X-Men, joining his co-star Joe Locke (who became Wiccan in Agatha All Along) in the MCU. It’s a choice that has come seemingly out of left field: before Connor’s name was in the mix, actors like Cooper Hoffman and Drew Starkey were circling the role. Cyclops is arguably the role to get for any actor in his early 20s, just as coveted as the newly vacated role of James Bond. Marvel has yet to officially confirm any X-Men casting other than Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, but Connor’s casting as Cyclops is as good as locked in. Of course, it may be a while before we see him take the baton from the likes of James Marsden (who first played the character in Fox’s mainline trilogy) and Tye Sheridan (who played a younger Scott in Fox’s X-Men prequels). Before Marvel reboots the team outright, Marsden is due to reprise his role as Cyclops in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday. Could another Cyclops from a different universe show up in Doomsday? Maybe Secret Wars? Because, beloved as Marsden is, it is time for fresh blood in the MCU. If Deadline’s scoop is accurate, at least we know the character will be in good hands.The next MCU X-Men movie has yet to confirm a release date.
