Getting to Magic Kingdom is about to look a little different.Beginning August 10, Walt Disney World will shift traffic onto a newly completed section of Floridian Way as part of its ongoing World Drive North expansion project. While the changes are temporary, guests driving to Magic Kingdom or nearby resorts should expect new traffic patterns, updated lane configurations, and additional construction throughout the area over the coming months.For many visitors, the drive into Magic Kingdom has already looked noticeably different over the past year. Now, another major milestone in the project is arriving, and Disney guests should be prepared before heading to the park.Credit: DisneyNew Traffic Pattern Begins August 10Starting August 10, vehicles will be redirected onto a newly built stretch of Floridian Way located between the Magic Kingdom parking lot and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Rather than using the previous roadway layout, drivers will temporarily travel on the newly completed southbound lanes while construction crews begin building the permanent northbound side, according to reports.Although the roadway is new, it isn’t the project’s final configuration.Fresh pavement markings have already been completed, and new directional signs have been installed to help drivers navigate the revised route. Guests approaching the area should pay close attention to posted signage, particularly if they’re accustomed to taking the same route into Magic Kingdom.The change is designed to keep traffic moving while Disney continues expanding the roadway network surrounding the park.More Roundabouts and Construction AheadThe traffic shift is only one phase of a much larger transportation project.Disney has already completed two of the three planned roundabouts that will eventually serve the area. Once traffic has been moved onto the new roadway, crews will begin constructing the final roundabout closer to the Magic Kingdom parking lot.Because of that work, guests should expect construction equipment, lane adjustments, and periodic changes as the project continues over the next year. Disney has also built temporary connector roads to maintain access to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the Wedding Pavilion, and the Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort while permanent entrances are completed.The resort entrances themselves will also change once construction wraps up. Grand Floridian will eventually receive a direct connection through one of the permanent roundabouts, while the Wedding Pavilion is expected to receive an entirely new entrance farther south.Credit: DisneyPrevious Road Changes Are Still Affecting DriversThe latest traffic update follows another major roadway change that already altered how guests access Magic Kingdom resorts.Disney permanently closed the intersection connecting Seven Seas Drive and Floridian Way, meaning Seven Seas Drive now ends at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Guests heading toward the area must instead use World Drive North, another adjustment that has already changed driving habits for many frequent visitors.According to the current timeline, the entire World Drive North Phase III expansion is expected to continue through late 2027 as Disney works to improve traffic flow around Magic Kingdom and nearby resort hotels.For anyone driving themselves to Walt Disney World over the next several months, allowing a few extra minutes to reach the park may be a smart idea while crews continue making progress.Construction Continues Across Magic KingdomThe roadway project isn’t the only place where guests are seeing construction.Inside Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened earlier this year after its extensive refurbishment, but Frontierland is entering an even bigger transformation. Construction is now underway on Piston Peak National Park, which is replacing the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area. Beyond that, Disney Villains Land is also planned for the expansion area, making Frontierland the center of some of the resort’s most ambitious future development.Tomorrowland has also remained busy. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin welcomed guests back following its extensive update, complete with refreshed ride technology and interactive improvements. Just a short walk away, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is now closed for an extended refurbishment that will introduce significant updates when it returns.Credit: Joe Penniston, FlickrMeanwhile, attention has already begun turning toward Space Mountain. Disney has not announced any plans for the iconic coaster, but rumors continue to suggest Tomorrowland’s signature attraction could eventually receive its own major modernization in the years ahead. There are rumors that we could hear a major update on Space Mountain at D23 in a matter of days.Construction extends beyond Magic Kingdom as well. Disney is continuing work on the Grand Floridian Resort, while Lakeshore Lodge continues rising on the former River Country site.
