( Front page “ Rijiju meets Rahul in bid to end Parliament logjam. “ August, 6)Thanks to the relentless disruptions by the Opposition, Parliament has been unable to conduct any meaningful business since the start of the monsoon session (Front page, August 6). Parliament is the sanctum sanctorum in a democracy and should be a forum for debate, not disruption. Nothing is lost if the government considers the Opposition’s two key demands. If doing so can help break the impasse, this must be pursued. The government must note that relying solely on its numerical strength will only deepen the stalemate. The sooner this stand-off ends, the better it will be for parliamentary democracy.V. Several of its initiatives will provide families with a modest financial cushion at milestones.The only jarring aspect is the naming of some of the schemes, which inadvertently reinforces patriarchal notions that sit uneasily with the ideals of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The government’s decision to prioritise welfare despite fiscal constraints, banking on governance reforms to create additional fiscal space is significant. While the Budget’s intent is laudable, the true test will be whether the government can sustain these generous welfare commitments without undermining fiscal discipline.M.
