Malta’s first official marine park has taken a major step forward, with the launch of the Ċirkewwa Marine Park Management Plan, turning the protected area from a legal designation into an actively managed marine reserve.The new framework sets out how the park will be protected in the years ahead, identifying the marine habitats and species that need safeguarding, the pressures affecting the area, and the measures required to preserve one of Malta’s most popular diving and recreational sites.Launched by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) together with several government entities, the plan includes proposals for clearer zoning of marine activities, improved mooring systems to reduce anchor damage, stronger monitoring and enforcement, enhanced diver safety, scientific research and educational initiatives.It also places a strong focus on protecting Posidonia seagrass meadows, one of the Mediterranean’s most important marine ecosystems, while exploring digital tools such as live underwater cameras and virtual reality experiences to raise public awareness.Speaking at the launch, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said protecting a marine area requires more than simply drawing boundaries on a map.“This Management Plan turns protection into action, with clear measures, shared responsibilities and continued monitoring,” she said, adding that the goal is to safeguard Ċirkewwa’s marine environment while allowing people to continue enjoying activities such as diving, boating, fishing and research responsibly.Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela described the park as an example of how environmental protection and tourism can work together, saying the initiative will help preserve Ċirkewwa’s biodiversity while strengthening Malta’s reputation as a sustainable diving destination.Rather than limiting access, the Management Plan aims to strike a balance between conservation and recreation, ensuring visitors can continue enjoying the area while reducing pressure on its most sensitive underwater habitats.What do you think of this?•
