Kerala govt. to allocate ₹5 crore to revive Travancore Cements - The HinduUpdated - August 06, 2026 07:57 pm IST - KOTTAYAMTravancore Cements Limited (TCL), the cash-strapped Kerala government-owned public sector undertaking, has received a fresh lifeline with the United Democratic Front (UDF) government deciding to sanction ₹5 crore to revive the unit.The decision was taken at a meeting convened in the chamber of Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan the other day. Industries Minister P. K. Kunhalikutty, senior government officials and company representatives attended the meeting, which explored ways to resume the company’s operations.According to TCL officials, the funds will primarily be used to restart the production of white cement, which has remained suspended for nearly three months due to disruptions in clinker imports following the conflict in West Asia and concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. TCL had been sourcing clinker from the UAE and now plans to float tenders to procure the raw material from alternative suppliers in Egypt or Turkey.The company has been also grappling with mounting financial liabilities. Salary payments have once again remained pending since June this year, taking the total salary arrears to 15 months. Meanwhile, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has frozen the company’s bank accounts over the non-payment of statutory provident fund contributions.With the EPF issue pending before the court, the management plans to seek permission to utilise the government allocation once the administrative sanction is issued. Company officials are hopeful that a portion of the funds can be used to make part payment of salaries and bonus to employees ahead of Onam.The meeting also reviewed the overall condition of the company, which has remained non-operational since April and discussed the technical issues delaying its revival. The Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries Department was directed to explore new options for protecting and sustaining the establishment beyond conventional methods and submit a detailed report.The Industries Minister said the government would continue to take all possible steps to revive the company. TCL had earlier submitted a comprehensive revival package to the government, which is still under consideration.TCL Managing Director G. Rajasekaran Pillai and representatives of various trade unions also attended the meeting.Published - August 06, 2026 07:56 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
