Dreambinding? How Billy Maximoff Returns in 'VisionQuest'

Wait 5 sec.

Marvel StudiosSpoilers ahead for VisionQuest Episode 7!Among the many mysteries lurking in the margins of VisionQuest, there was one particularly burning question: when would Thomas Shepherd, aka Tommy Maximoff (Ruaridh Mollica), finally reunite with his brother Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke)? Though the twins were little more than constructs of their mother Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) magic when we met them in WandaVision, Agatha All Along revealed that their souls had survived the destruction of Westview and found new host bodies. Billy set out to find the new version of his brother at the end of Agatha, and in VisionQuest, we finally learned where Thomas has been all these years: London.Nice as it’s been to watch Thomas reconnect with his dad — or, at least, a new version of him — Vision (Paul Bettany), a potential reunion between Thomas and Billy has been front-of-mind for weeks. For a moment, it seemed like VisionQuest would end without the Maximoff brothers crossing paths at all, instead saving their team-up for a future Marvel project. (Avengers: Secret Wars, maybe?) It’s true that they don’t reunite physically by the end of VisionQuest, but the series gives us the next best thing with help from a previously unknown form of magic. Billy finally returns to the MCU in the VisionQuest finale. | Marvel StudiosAs with so many misadventures in VisionQuest, the bulk of the show’s two-part finale takes place within the mind. Vision retreats deep into the recesses of his code to learn about the history of the original Human Torch and his creator, but he’s not the only one doing some introspection. Thomas also manages to connect to Billy through a process called “dream-binding.” It turns out that Billy’s been trying to find Thomas for some time, but because he had no idea where his brother actually was, Billy’s magic was relatively ineffective. In Episode 7, we learn that he casts a dream-binding spell (likely with some guidance from Agatha Harkness), which allows him to converse with Tommy — but only if Thomas is kind of unconscious. Thomas instructs his pal Lisa (Lauren Morais) to hold him underwater. Given his past trauma at a swimming pool — where the “original” Thomas technically drowned, allowing Tommy’s spirit to inhabit his body — he’s spiritually and mentally closer to Billy than ever before. The Maximoff twins briefly get the chance to catch up, and though Thomas does make sure to ask Billy for help saving Vision from an uncertain fate, he’s a bit too far away to lend a hand.Thomas doesn’t meet his brother in VisionQuest, but the stage is set for a real reunion. | Marvel StudiosWith Billy stuck Stateside, Thomas and Lisa are forced to seek other allies in their plans to rescue Vision. That’s pretty much all we get by way of a reunion, but it’s a promising start that could pay off very soon. Marvel has been tentatively sowing the seeds for a Young Avengers-centric story, which, if greenlit soon, could be the stage for Thomas and Billy’s real-world team-up. Whatever Marvel’s plans, though, VisionQuest has stoked even more excitement to see the Maximoffs at full power.VisionQuest is streaming on Disney+.
