In a study of 193 participants, researchers found that blood-based short-chain fatty acid profiles distinguished colorectal cancer, celiac disease, obesity, and healthy controls with 95% accuracy, compared with 59% for stool-based measurements. Combining blood and stool profiles increased accuracy to 97%, suggesting that circulating microbial metabolites may offer valuable diagnostic information, although larger studies are needed to validate the findings.
