Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over Slavia Praha in the Champions League last night, but their performance after the interval left plenty of room for concern. The Gunners had looked comfortable for much of the first half, yet their sloppy display after the break allowed the hosts back into the contest and put their victory at risk.Mikel Arteta’s side started brightly and controlled much of the opening period. They established a 2-0 lead before half time and created enough opportunities to suggest they could have scored as many as four goals. Their attacking play gave the impression that they were heading towards a comfortable evening. However, Arsenal failed to maintain that level after the restart. Their opponents took control of the game, while the visitors struggled to keep possession and repeatedly gave the ball away. The Gunners eventually conceded, making the closing stages considerably more uncomfortable than they should have been.Arsenal struggle after the breakArteta and his players would have expected to continue dominating after half time, but the second period developed very differently. Slavia Praha put Arsenal under sustained pressure, exposing weaknesses in their possession and defensive organisation. The goal arrived late, which helped Arsenal preserve their advantage. Had the hosts found the net earlier, the visitors could have faced an even more difficult finish, with the possibility of conceding again and dropping points. The result was positive for Arsenal, but their second half performance will concern the manager. Against stronger opponents in the Champions League, such a loss of control could prove costly.(Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)Arteta unhappy with Arsenal’s performanceSpeaking after the match, Arteta admitted that his players had been careless and allowed Slavia Praha to dictate the contest. The Spanish manager said via Sky Sports:“We were on the back foot, very sloppy, we gave so many balls away, so many bad clearances. We didn’t keep the ball in our structure at all. And then you have to suffer because teams in the Champions League are really good. A lot to learn.”Although Arsenal collected all three points, they cannot afford to repeat that second half display. Their ability to control matches for the full 90 minutes will be important if they want to maintain their progress in the competition._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans.
