I have been on the $29/mo starter plan of Ahrefs at beginning of my SaaS journey and tbh at first it looked good, but then came the bummer. When i started looking forward to SEO, learning more about SEO, researching then I felt the limitations of $29/mo plan of Ahrefs. Seriously, it doesn't give you any API or MCP access then also it doesn't give enough allowance, only 200 searches among backlinks, keyword research (includes your own site research too) which is very limiting and you will exhaust within in a week or two. I mean ofc Semrush has $129/mo starting plan, so Ahrefs has a big win for small and early stage solopreneurs, but still man it is a lot to take. When i researched more about SEO, I came across Dataforseo which looked like a pretty sweet deal, but again to even start you need atleast $50 to begin with and the UI of dataforseo is pathetic, your only hope is to either use API or MCP version, or use OpenSEO as a wrapper. But there is a catch with all these tools, semrush shows different data, ahrefs shows different data, and dataforseo also shows different data for each and every competitor site, because in the end they run their own scraping method and formulas which are never true like search console insights, only close. And i never counted AI citations till now, which is a different story altogether. So if you're serious that means you need to own Semrush, Ahrefs and Dataforseo all at once to really get the benefit of serious SEO research for your site, and if you now sum all of the prices, it is a nightmare.
