Cesc Fabregas has little-known incentive to stay at Como despite inevitable exit for Premier League

While Cesc Fabregas’ personal project at Como tempts him to remain in Italy, a romantic return to the Emirates Stadium feels all-but inevitable. The former Arsenal and Chelsea player’s side produced a stunning performance away to Lens as they put nine goals past the French club in the Champions League on Wednesday night.Como are also the first team to score nine goals in an away European Cup match since Feyenoord won 9-0 at Olympiakos Nicosia in 1971GettyHaving already defeated RB Leipzig and Manchester United, they have lifted themselves fourth in the league phase table. A 3-2 defeat to Feyenoord is their only stain on their stunning European campaign so far.Como’s rise in the last decade has been staggering, with the club playing in the fourth tier of Italian football as recently as 2019.The Serie A side was taken over by the London-based media company Sent Entertainment which dramatically changed the trajectory of the club.In 2022, Fabregas was revealed as a new Como player as the club sat in Serie B.He invested a minority ownership share when he joined, partnering alongside former Barcelona teammate Thierry Henry with the exact percentage not being publicly disclosed.Following the news of his retirement one year later, he was appointed the Italian side’s under-19 and B-teams manager and was promoted to be the first-team’s boss four months later on an interim basis. In his first season in charge in 2023/24, he guided Como to promotion which became their first time in the top flight in 21 years.Last season, he helped the Italian side secure European qualification for the first time in the club’s history as they overtook AC Milan in Serie A on the final day.The 39-year-old has rapidly become one of the most sought-after managerial minds in Europe since he transformed Como. However, Italian sports reporter Greg Whelan believes the ex-Barcelona midfielder is committed to the project with the Italian club, for the foreseeable at least.Fabregas’ reputation continues to grow after Como’s historic 9-1 win in the Champions LeagueGettyWhelan said: “He has done extremely well, his reputation stands before him now and he has spoken to other clubs.“He spoke to Inter 15-16 months ago when [Simone] Izaghi left and I think Roma made a play for him as well at the time before [Gian Piero] Gasperini came in.“But he said, ‘I am part of something at Como and I want to try and see it through’ and he did have a stake in the club when he joined as a player back in 2022, this is something that is very important to him. Where it goes and how long it takes is another question.”Fabregas to leave Como? The Spaniard is contracted with Como until June 2028; however, reportedly he pushed to include a specific clause in his deal which allows him to leave on favourable financial terms if an offer arrives from one of his three former clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona).Mikel Arteta recently signed a four-year contract extension which will keep him as manager at the Emirates until June 2030.However, Whelan didn’t rule out Fabregas working as a successor to Arteta. Arteta’s new Arsenal deal will see him earn almost £70,000-a-dayGettyHe responded: “I think it’s inevitable that he will end up at a big club eventually, for sure.“You only have to see the way Como play and the whole of Europe is seeing it, they play some of the best football in Serie A. If that’s not an advert for a head coach, I don’t know what is.”
