Gozo’s electricity network is set for an €11 million upgrade as Enemalta moves ahead with plans to strengthen power distribution across the island and prepare for growing electricity demand. The state energy company has issued two major tenders worth a combined €11 million for the supply and installation of new underground electricity cables, aimed at making Gozo’s electricity network more reliable and resilient. The larger tender, valued at approximately €7 million, covers trenching works and the installation of new 33kV underground cables connecting the 132kV Distribution Centre to existing distribution centres in Xewkija and Qala, as well as a new distribution centre in Kerċem.A second tender, worth an estimated €4 million, will cover the supply and delivery of the underground cables needed for the project. The works will be carried out in three phases, covering Għajnsielem, Xewkija and the Xewkija-Victoria area.Enemalta said measures will be introduced to minimise disruption to residents and motorists, including controlling noise and dust levels and ensuring roads are properly reinstated once works are completed.“Gozo remains a priority in our investment programme and these tenders reflect the importance we are placing on upgrading the island’s electricity infrastructure as part of our long-term strategy for the Maltese Islands,” Enemalta Executive Chairman Ryan Fava said. The investment is intended to strengthen connections between Gozo’s main electricity distribution centres while increasing the network’s capacity to meet future demand from households and businesses. It forms part of Enemalta’s wider programme to modernise Malta and Gozo’s electricity infrastructure and improve the reliability of electricity supply.Interested contractors can submit their bids through the government’s electronic tendering platform at www.etenders.gov.mt.Do you think this investment will help address Gozo’s electricity infrastructure needs?•
