An Analysis of the Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars sale and Keeneland Book 1:Six weanlings brought $1 million or more at Fasig-Tipton November and Keeneland Book 1 this week. Across the previous nine years, those same sales had produced eight. Among this year's six were a full-brother to 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court and a granddaughter of Leslie's Lady, dam of Into Mischief, four-time champion Beholder and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Mendelssohn. Lexington's two premier breeding stock sales run on consecutive days at different auction houses, and many of the same buyers work both. Thirty-three buyers purchased in both rooms and spent $95.3 million between them, nearly half the combined $199.6 million gross. Katsumi Yoshida, Spendthrift Farm, Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa and Glen Hill Farm were among them. Yoshida spent $10.9 million on six horses at Fasig-Tipton, including Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Kathynmarissa for $3.2 million. His only Keeneland purchase was Wild Bout Hilary, in foal to Constitution, for $600,000. Hill 'n' Dale spent more at Keeneland, where it bought Ahavah, in foal to Gun Runner, for $4.8 million. Japanese buyers spent $25.3 million at Fasig-Tipton and $5.2 million in Book 1. Eleven of the 17 fillies and mares they bought Monday were racing or broodmare prospects, the category responsible for more than half of Fasig-Tipton's gross. Fasig-Tipton's 46 cataloged mares in foal included 25 stakes winners. The mares sold brought an $887,500 median, compared with $425,000 for broodmares at Keeneland, which cataloged 100. The difference held among mares carrying covers advertised at $200,000 or more: $987,500 at Fasig-Tipton against $775,000 in Book 1.All 12 mares offered in foal to Gun Runner sold, five at Fasig-Tipton and seven at Keeneland. Both groups brought a $1.2 million median. Whisper Hill Farm paid $2.9 million for Flag Day at Keeneland. Yosuke Imafuku bought Bottle of Rouge for $2.2 million at Fasig-Tipton. Ahavah brought more than twice what Bottle of Rouge did on the same cover. Neither has a foal of racing age, so buyers were assessing their breeding potential through their own racing records, pedigrees and physicals. Keeneland's $300,000 weanling median was nearly twice Fasig-Tipton's $160,000. Its catalog also carried a $75,000 median advertised conception fee, against $30,000 at Fasig-Tipton. Which room paid more depended on the sire. Into Mischief's weanlings brought an $800,000 median at Fasig-Tipton against $475,000 at Keeneland. Gun Runner went the other way: $600,000 in Book 1, against $400,000 for his only weanling at Fasig-Tipton. Across the 16 sires with weanlings sold at both sales, Keeneland had the higher median for eight, Fasig-Tipton for seven, and National Treasure finished level. Most groups contained only one to three horses. For a breeder choosing where to sell, the overall medians offer limited guidance. A more useful comparison is with the foals in the book being considered. The six million-dollar weanlings sold across both catalogs, four at Keeneland and two at Fasig-Tipton. That doubled the previous combined high of three in 2017. M.V. Magnier and White Birch Farm paid $1.3 million at Keeneland for Ruling Court's full brother by Justify. At Fasig-Tipton, Caitlin Dunne, acting for Asagi Stables, bought a Not This Time filly out of Feeling Mischief for $1.15 million and an Into Mischief filly out of Solo Album for $1 million. Four of the six were fillies, including Glen Hill Farm's $1 million American Pharoah granddaughter of Leslie's Lady. Her sire stood for $45,000 when she was conceived; her dam, Lady Irene, was Leslie's Lady's last foal.
