Quite frankly it’s getting insulting. I just had a someone comment about how they “know more about their neuropathy than their neurologist.” This person then goes on to say how they’ve brought up meds their neurologist didn’t even know about and then obtained low dose naltrexone on their own. This person then proceeds to call myself and other physicians worthless. When I come on to reddit, I try to distance myself from this type of crap and stick to hobby subs but every now and again, someone decides to take it upon themselves to tell me how worthless and uppity physicians are. Hell, I can imagine I’ll be getting a few comments from laypeople on this post. But it contributes so much to my burnout. I know I shouldn’t let it, but it does. I’m not saying I’m infallible, but it’s so frustrating to hear about people’s “research” when they have no idea about actual scientific research, the articles we pour through, the journal clubs, all the clinical information to be the most up to date we can on medical management. Hell, even just how much CME we have to do, the boards we take, and the conferences we go to. I have so many people who come in about their “own research” regarding cortisol, statins, levothyroxine, compounded meds, and all this other stuff that has NO evidence to support it. That’s what gets me so enraged is that they come in, not willing to discuss, but to be confrontational. Then they think we’re stupid because we aren’t aware of these fringe articles or research they’re talking about. It’s honestly crushing to work so hard every day to provide the best care you can, having sacrificed so much, only to have people shit all over you. Thankfully these interactions are few and far in between, but damn if it doesn’t grind my gears. submitted by /u/Paleomedicine [link] [comments]
