I made a free exercise dataset that knows what to swap in when you can’t do a pull-up yet

Wait 5 sec.

I've been working on a fitness app for a while, and getting decent exercise data took way longer than I expected. Most of the open datasets I tried have a name, the muscles and a short paragraph of instructions, in English. That's enough to show a list, but my app also needed to know what to suggest when someone can't do an exercise yet, or doesn't have a barbell. So I put together my own, using millions of claude tokens and open-sourced it. It has 908 exercises in English and Spanish, and 814 of them come with a full guide: how to set up, the steps, form cues, common mistakes and how to fix them, and how many sets and reps to start with. Each guide also links to other exercises in the dataset, with a one-line reason for each. Barbell squat, for example, lists goblet squat and bodyweight squat as easier versions, front squat and box squat as harder ones, and dumbbell squat or leg press if you don't have a rack. I haven't seen that in other open datasets, and it's the part my app needed most for swaps and progressions. It's MIT licensed, and you can try it in your terminal with `npx exercises-cli get barbell-squat`. The rest is on GitHub: - JSON files: https://github.com/kinetic-place/exercises-json - Files ready to seed a database: https://github.com/kinetic-place/exercises-db - A REST API you can host on Cloudflare Workers: https://github.com/kinetic-place/exercises-api There are no images or videos yet. It started from wrkout/exercises.json, so thanks to them for the base. If you spot a missing exercise or a muscle tagged wrong, tell me and I'll fix it. submitted by /u/tenhsor [link] [comments]
