Arsenal continued their Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Slavia Prague on Wednesday evening, although Mikel Arteta’s side made considerably harder work of the second half than they would have liked.Following Sunday’s historic victory over Liverpool at Anfield, the Gunners arrived full of confidence and looking to maintain their impressive European form.Madueke and Gyokeres Put Arsenal in ControlArsenal made the perfect start, taking the lead after just nine minutes.Viktor Gyokeres showed excellent strength to win possession around the halfway line before releasing Noni Madueke, who raced through and calmly finished past the Slavia goalkeeper. The Gunners looked comfortable throughout much of the opening period, controlling possession and limiting the hosts’ opportunities.Their advantage doubled in the 38th minute when Gyokeres combined neatly with Mikel Merino before producing an excellent finish into the far corner. It was a particularly encouraging first half for the Swedish striker, who had already provided the assist for Arsenal’s opener. At 2-0 going into the interval, Arsenal appeared firmly in control.(Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)Arsenal Survive Nervy Second HalfHowever, the second half proved a very different affair.Slavia Prague grew increasingly confident, putting Arsenal’s defence under pressure and forcing David Raya into action.Gabriel was particularly important, making two crucial goal-line clearances as the hosts searched desperately for a way back into the contest.Arteta introduced Cristhian Mosquera and Christos Tzolis in the 62nd minute, replacing Ezri Konsa and Eberechi Eze.Martin Odegaard and Jurrien Timber followed in the 78th minute, replacing Gyokeres and Ben White. The pressure eventually told when Slavia Prague pulled a goal back in the closing stages, setting up an uncomfortable finish for the visitors.Young Max Dowman also made a late appearance, replacing Madueke in stoppage time.Arsenal held firm to secure another important three points in Europe, although Arteta will undoubtedly have concerns about how much control his side surrendered after the break. It certainly wasn’t a vintage second-half performance, but following their victory at Anfield, the Gunners have maintained their winning momentum. Were you concerned by Arsenal’s second-half performance, or is getting the result all that matters?
