is the bar really that low or am i just underestimating my efforts?

Wait 5 sec.

to preface, i am currently a nursing student, but i also work as a patient care tech at a pediatric hospital. i am float pool, so i am seen in pretty much every area of the hospital outside of day surgery and pacu. lately, a lot of good word about me has been floating around regarding the care i provide my sitter cases. two sitter cases in particular gave me a lot of good word. one was an autistic kiddo who was very irate and aggressive at times and another was a trauma case who was still in pretty rough shape when i was assigned to him. i got a lot of kudos for being so patient with my autistic kiddo. both his nurse and the charge made a point to my supervisor that i did an excellent job remaining calm, comforting the patient, and meeting his needs. the trauma case also got me a bit of kudos because i spent what was likely an hour and a half just cleaning this kid when i sat with him. he hadn’t had hygiene in days and his hair was starting to matt. his nurse was very pleased with how much i took my time cleaning him and making sure he was comfortable. i spent a good bit of time combing his hair after i washed it to help get all the tangles out. my question is why is it made out to be like i’m going “above and beyond” by doing the job i’m hired to do? like why would i be upset with a kid who has autism and is struggling to cope with his situation? why wouldn’t i want to spend my time helping a kid who’s incapacitated get clean and feeling normal again? like isn’t that just basic empathy? and maybe im just naive because im so new to healthcare, but its really saddened me to find out that the way i view my practice is actually not as common as it should be submitted by /u/thisdudeaustin [link] [comments]
