Tottenham’s A Team vs B Team proves Roberto De Zerbi finally has squad depth

Wait 5 sec.

Tottenham’s squad depth is an underrated quality that could prove to be the difference between a relegation scrap, a top-half finish or a European push. There are so many things to be excited about as a Tottenham fan. For one, Spurs look to have turned their horrendous form around, picking up three consecutive wins in the Premier League. That is a significant improvement on the first six league games, in which they were winless and, at one point, rooted to the bottom of the table. However, with three wins on the bounce, things are finally starting to look up, with Tottenham no longer concerned about a relegation scrap, at least for now, as they sit ninth in the Premier League table, just three points off the top five.In fact, Spurs’ odds of avoiding relegation have improved significantly, with the latest predictions handing Tottenham a mere 5.50% chance of going down.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramOpta Supercomputer’s latest predicted Premier League table for 2026/27Predicted positionClubCurrent positionPredicted pointsCurrent pointsPoints still expectedTitle %UCL %UEL %Relegation %1Arsenal181.212457.2168.23%97.98%1.11%0.00%2Manchester City271.982150.9818.86%84.18%6.54%0.01%3Brighton366.591947.596.86%65.93%11.23%0.04%4Liverpool563.211548.213.06%48.47%13.84%0.15%5Chelsea459.741643.741.45%31.31%13.49%0.47%6Aston Villa955.391243.390.33%16.05%9.66%1.94%7Bournemouth755.101243.100.40%15.85%9.75%2.14%8Brentford653.201439.200.23%11.03%7.88%3.19%9Tottenham Hotspur851.201239.200.15%7.52%5.89%5.50%10Newcastle United1250.551139.550.15%6.73%4.95%7.23%11Everton1449.411039.410.12%4.87%4.90%9.21%12Leeds United1148.691137.690.10%4.22%3.87%9.46%13Manchester United1744.00737.000.02%1.48%1.29%22.16%14Fulham1543.59934.590.02%1.17%1.28%23.44%15Ipswich Town1343.651132.650.01%0.92%1.10%24.20%16Hull City1041.991130.990.00%0.56%0.90%30.03%17Nottingham Forest1941.67635.670.00%0.63%0.82%31.86%18Coventry City1640.76931.760.00%0.51%0.59%37.20%19Crystal Palace1839.48732.480.01%0.40%0.54%44.15%20Sunderland2038.45533.450.00%0.19%0.37%47.62%But it is not just the results that will leave fans excited; the personnel within the club also give reason for optimism.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramTottenham squad depth could be key under Roberto De ZerbiTottenham have a really strong starting XI, which should hardly come as a surprise given how much was invested in the squad.Close to £400million was spent on ten new signings, and at the very least, such a squad should be able to compete for a top-half finish.Spurs are managing that, but they could well push beyond it, and that is because of their depth, which is an underrated factor. The Tottenham first XI has many exciting names and features players of tremendous quality. The likes of Mohammed Kudus, Jan Paul van Hecke, Micky van de Ven and Sandro Tonali are among the best in the league.Spurs Web looked at a few Premier League stats, and these players rank highly, with Kudus among the top two dribblers, van Hecke and van de Ven ranking highly for accurate passes and line-breaking passes, and Tonali ranking high for distance covered per 90.And while that is great, an elite Premier League squad does not just have a strong core XI; its backups must be just as good, and Spurs look to have that as well.Spurs have two XIs capable of competingLooking at Tottenham’s backup options, one would feel confident that, for once, the Lilywhites could cope with an injury crisis. In fact, one could argue that the last three weeks, in which Spurs have been so impressive, have been an injury crisis.PlayerInjuryPotential returnLucas BergvallKnee injuryNovember 2026Tosin AdarabioyoCalf injuryNovember 2026Mykhailo MudrykAnkle injuryNovember 2026SavioMuscular injuryNovember 2026Wilson OdobertACL injuryJanuary 2027 (training)Xavi SimonsACL injuryEarly 2027Savio, ideally a key part of the starting XI, is sidelined, while Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie, who form part of Spurs’ first-choice back four, were also sidelined and did not start any of the three games in the winning run.In midfield, Rodrigo Bentancur was arguably the best midfielder at the club at the start of the season but has been absent from the squad, yet the level has been maintained. That is simply because of the depth Tottenham have. The Lilywhites currently have two XIs capable of staying competitive.Marcos Senesi has just as good a passing range as van Hecke, and Andy Robertson is just as capable as Udogie. Lucas Bergvall can come in for Tonali, and Bentancur can equally replace Mateus Fernandes.Up top, Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski, Mathys Tel and Luca Williams-Barnett are all players who could come into the Tottenham side and maintain the standards. This, of course, is largely down to the system. De Zerbi’s tactics do not necessarily depend on individuals, but instead work best when the whole squad plays as a team. The manager himself alluded to this in his recent press conference, admitting that the upturn in form was down to his side finally playing as a team rather than as individuals. He said: “I think even before the national break we were playing well. We were playing maybe not 90 minutes, but many parts of that game we played very well. We didn’t score. We conceded a stupid goal and then we lost energy. We lost spirit. We lost the right union between the players.“If we compare Tottenham before the national break and Tottenham after the national break, now we are playing as a team. Before the national break we were playing as many very good players, but not as a team.”This overlooked quality, Spurs’ squad depth, could well be the reason they finish higher up the table than many expected.Tottenham’s A team: Kinsky; Porro, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali, Maddison; Kudus, Solanke, MarmoushTottenham A Team line-upSpurs’ B team: Dubravka; Gray, Tosin, Senesi, Robertson; Bentancur, Bergvall, Gallagher; Kulusevski, Tel, Williams-BarnettSpurs B Team line-upREAD MORE: Tottenham eye move for striker who has even more goals than Harry Kane in 2026The post Tottenham’s A Team vs B Team proves Roberto De Zerbi finally has squad depth appeared first on Spurs Web.
