The Headmaster of Achimota School, Ebenezer Graham Acquaah, has commended the school’s 1986-year group for renovating the Aggrey Chapel, describing the intervention as a significant act of gratitude, restoration and commitment to the institution’s heritage.Speaking at the official handover ceremony of the 1986 Legacy Project on Tuesday, November 3, Mr Acquaah said the renovation had restored the chapel’s former glory while preserving its historical character. He described the Aggrey Chapel, named after the school’s co-founder, Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, as the spiritual heartbeat of Achimota School, noting that it had served generations of students as a place of prayer, worship and spiritual development.According to him, the chapel had been an important part of school life for 99 years, providing students with opportunities for baptism, confirmation and spiritual preparation, as well as a place of peace before the beginning of each school week. However, years of exposure to the weather had taken a toll on the building, leaving some of its pews broken, its sound system inadequate and its paintwork faded. He said the deterioration had made worship uncomfortable, making the intervention by the 1986-year group particularly significant.Mr Acquaah noted that 40 years after leaving the school, the alumni had demonstrated their commitment to their alma mater by deciding to restore the chapel rather than allow it to deteriorate further. The renovation works included electrical rewiring, the installation of modern sound systems and fans, the provision of new altar cloths, improvements to some of the pews and the repainting of the entire chapel, both inside and outside. He said the works had restored the building’s original appearance while retaining its inherited character. The Headmaster expressed appreciation to the chairman, executives and all members of the 1986 year group, both in Ghana and abroad, for their contributions towards the project. He particularly acknowledged contributions of all sizes, saying every member deserved recognition, regardless of whether they donated GH¢10 or GH¢100,000.Describing the gesture as a demonstration of the Achimotan spirit of unity, captured in the school’s motto, Ut Omnes Unum Sint (That All May Be One), he said the alumni had shown younger generations that Achimotans never forget their roots.Mr Acquaah assured the alumni that school management would maintain the renovated facility with the utmost care, while the Chaplaincy Council would ensure it was used for its intended religious purpose. He called on the school community to celebrate the project with gratitude and renewed commitment to the institution’s values, expressing confidence that the legacy of Dr Kwegyir Aggrey would continue to live on through the generations.
