what units are the least sad/depressing/absolutely damaging to my overly empathetic heart

Wait 5 sec.

for context i’ve been working on a heart failure floor for a little over 2 years and seeing all these pts slowly wither away is slowly starting to weigh on me. i love sitting and talking w the pts and getting to know them, but in doing so, it makes me feel for them more. for example, a pt was telling me about how he’s getting tired of being in and out of the hospital and misses his three dogs 💔 and how his daughter just bought him a new fancy recliner but he hasn’t been able to use it much 💔💔 and if he was home right now his dogs would be all piled in his lap 💔💔💔 i know it’s “part of the job” hearing these stories, but it’s getting harder and harder for me mentally and emotionally to hear the same variations of these people lives that want to be home with their families or loved ones but just aren’t really getting any better and keep coming back to hospital. anyway, i say all this to ask if their are any types of units that are just slightly less depressing, and people die/get sicker slightly less, and would maybe be a little more uplifting, or maybe see people actually get healthier instead of getting them just healthy enough for them to go home. also, if anyone has any tips on how to not be absolutely crushed by hearing these sob stories and not wanting to just go home and cry my little heart out after work all the time, it would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/ashdhoerner [link] [comments]
