This is not a full-size home router but, as the name suggests, a compact travel companion that measures roughly the size of a paperback book, with foldable antennas so it slips easily into a bag. It also supports Ethernet input and USB modems, along with range extender and wireless client modes. That flexibility is particularly useful when you’re juggling a laptop, phone, and maybe a tablet and would prefer not to sign each one into a shaky network separately. Setup is straightforward through the TP-Link Tether app: scan a QR code, choose your connection type, and you’re online in a few minutes.Once it’s running, the hardware covers the basics, with a 2.5 Gbps port for a wired connection like a hotel’s Ethernet jack, a 1 Gbps port for a wired device, and a USB 3.0 port for a storage drive or phone tethering. And since it draws power over USB-C (5V/3A), a basic power bank can keep it going through a long layover or a camping trip. As handy as it is on the road, though, it’s not meant to replace a full-size home router—even with its 5 GHz band and Wi-Fi 7 support—which will generally offer better coverage and more consistent speeds. Real-world performance also depends heavily on your connection and setup. USB tethering, for example, can feel slower than using your phone directly. It also leaves out features like automatic band steering, so you may end up managing networks yourself. Still, if you travel often or need a portable network hub for multiple devices, you’ll find it holds up pretty well.
