I've been a nurse for about 10 years and have some ED experience, though several years ago. I recently got hired for an ED job I really wanted, at a prestigious hospital with a nurses union and such. Though the job wasn't exactly what I was expecting, with insane patient ratios and pretty gross conditions, I've still found pride in my work and have been adjusting fairly well. I'm about 3 months into this job and one of the managers just called me after my shift telling me we'll have to meet and I'll have to find a union delegate to join us. God damn it. This is the second time I've had to do this and I'm so fucking embarrassed. The first time was for a patient verification error when running a point of care test. I grabbed the wrong vial and assumed it was mine, and ran the test under the wrong patient name. I instantly realized my mistake and tried to stop the test but couldn't, so immediately messaged the MD and CNM, and had to file a report against myself. I ended up with a verbal warning that would be removed in 6 months. And then this week, I caused a narcotic discrepancy. Thankfully, there was an extra Valium and not one missing. But not good. The MD had ordered 15mg of Valium, and I grabbed a vial from the Pyxis thinking it was 20mg and not 10mg. So I wasted 1/4 of the vial and inadvertently under-dosed the patient. The nurse observing me waste didn't notice my mistake either. I'm really thinking I'm not cut out for the ED after all, but I honestly don't know what other kind of nursing I would really enjoy, and the blow to my confidence is already massive. I'm going to be doubled over with anxiety all weekend and all through my next shift, and I think I'm going to waive my right to a delegate because I'm so fucking embarrassed. submitted by /u/DoctorZordersDDS [link] [comments]
